Indian Rocks Beach is a small strip of barrier island just off the coast of Pinellas County, just north of Indian Shores and south of Belleair Beach. Indian Rocks Beach homes for sale are in high demand by people looking for a leisurely lifestyle on the beach, away from the hustle and bustle of the city. With a population of just over 4,000 residents, Indian Rocks Beach definitely qualifies as a small town. There is a mix of single family homes and condos, most with water views, but even without a water view, you can walk to the water from any address in town. This is a great spot for boaters, with numerous homes located directly on the calm intercoastal waterway.
People considering Indian Rocks Beach homes for sale often ask how the area got its’ name, but there is no documentation to answer that question with certainty. Local legend claims that an Indian Chief named Chic-a-Si fell ill, and his people carried him to a healing mineral spring near a rocky spot on the coast. After drinking from the sulfur-rich mineral spring (purportedly a mineral spring located in what is now Kolb Park), the Chief recovered from his illness, and the Indians made yearly pilgrimages to the spring to drink its healing waters. Early settlers are said to have named the spot with the spring “The Indian Rocks”.
To the south, the island narrows, and that is where you will find the neighboring town of Indian Shores. Home to some 1500 people, there are fewer business and homes here, simply because there is less land to build on. None the less, this is still a great place to live, still has beautiful beaches and sunsets, and it is home to the famous Salt Rock Grill restaurant and its’ beautiful views of the intercostal waterway.
Indian Rocks Beach. Three miles long. One traffic light. No four lane roads. 30 mph speed limit. Indian Rocks Beach homes for sale are the epitome of small town Florida living. Of course, the beach is the main attraction here, with its’ powdery sugar sand and warm waters, but residents of Indian Rocks Beach support a lively mixture of recreational activities. The Indian Rocks Beach Nature Preserve is a peaceful, tranquil retreat teeming with wildlife, offering a boardwalk through lush Florida mangrove. Kolb Park is just six blocks away, and George C, McGough Nature Park is just on the other side of the Indian Rocks Causeway. And when you are surrounded by all this clear water, sailors and pleasure boats of every stamp are sure to follow. You can access the open Gulf in minutes by sail or motorboat, or kayak the glassy waters of the intercostal waterway. And of course, fishermen love casting their lines off the piers and bridges, or best of all, off the seawall in their own back yard!
Obviously, any Florida beach town is going to get its’ share of tourists, and from the beginning, people have tried to turn Indian Rocks Beach into a kitschy tourist destination. Of course there are beach rentals and hotels on the beach, but people looking at Indian Rocks Beach homes for sale discover that Indian Rocks Beach is a town that visitors drive through to get to the more tourist-oriented areas like Treasure Island and Clearwater Beach.
Back in 1914, the Tampa and Gulf Coast Railroad ran a line west from Tampa out to Indian Rocks. They marketed the island as “Tampa’s Playground”, and well-to-do Tampa residents rode the train out to the beach to escape the muggy Tampa summers. Then in 1964, the Tiki Gardens opened, which was a Polynesian-themed park with giant tiki statues and botanical gardens that garnered 300,000 visitors per year at its’ peak, but it closed in the early 80’s. Most current Indian Rocks Beach residents today are happy for the slower pace and lighter traffic.
